OPS Environmental Specialist I

Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve


Position & Duties

Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) in Eastpoint, Florida is in search of a qualified candidate to fill the OPS Environmental Specialist I position. One of 29 Reserves nationwide, ANERR is a partnership program between the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Primary job duties will be related to the management of the water quality portion of Reserve's System-Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP). Additionally, the position is responsible for data management, data analysis, and quarterly submissions to the NERR’s Centralized Data Management Office.

Other duties will include assisting with other research activities, such as meteorological and nutrient components of SWMP, listed species monitoring (shorebirds and sea turtles), emergent vegetation monitoring, zooplankton, and trawling. The position is also responsible for assisting visiting researchers with field sampling.

The applicant should have a good background in estuarine ecology and the dynamics of estuarine systems. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a field of natural science is required. Knowledge and experience with data management and statistics is also desired, but not required.

Examples of knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of estuarine ecology and the dynamics of how estuaries function regarding the interaction of physical, chemical, and biological components.

  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in a scientific laboratory.

  • Knowledge of field techniques involving the sampling of physical, chemical, and biological parameters using dataloggers, water samplers, trawls, and other field gear.

  • Skill in the operation of boats ranging in size from 16 feet to 29 feet in open water

  • Skill in various software programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint is required. Skill in the use of statistical software such as R, SAS, SPSS, JMP, PRIMER or other software is preferred.

  • Diver certification and the willingness to gain FDEP dive certification

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve a singular goal.

  • Ability to work and carry heavy field gear in harsh field conditions.


The position is stationed at the Reserve Center in Eastpoint, located in the Florida Panhandle, situated along the coast midway between Tallahassee and Panama City.

Funding and Salary

Hourly pay range is $14.00 to $16.00 /hour, depending on level of qualifications and experience. Limited benefits are available including health insurance and retirement. Paid leave and holidays are not available.

Minimum qualificationsA Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences, marine science, environmental science, or oceanography.
