What You Will Do
We are currently seeking Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC) Operators to work in the FDOT D3 Regional Control Room in Chipley, FL. The main responsibilities will be to manage FDOT traffic incident response to crashes and other highway incidents and emergencies with the primary goal of responder and motorist safety. These positions are Full-Time or Part-Time, depending upon circumstances at the time of hiring.
Work in a 24 hour per day, 7 days per week operation with the primary goal of motorist safety
Operate and control traffic management devices (CCTV, Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), etc.) and other equipment to monitor major portions of the FDOT District 3 Interstate and State highway systems
Monitor first responder and law enforcement (including the Florida Highway Patrol), radio communications and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)
Activate appropriate response(s) to detected and/or reported incidents; including, but not limited to, dispatch of Road Ranger Service Patrols, location assistance to first responders and notification to the public
Communicate and coordinate with law enforcement, including Florida Highway Patrol, Emergency Management, emergency responders, incident management entities and others.
Communicate and coordinate with FDOT personnel
Generate, receive, and respond to calls pertaining to various persons/organizations/agencies
Communicate and coordinate with Road Rangers
Make notifications to FDOT personnel, including State Level offices
Record all appropriate Control Room activities in incident database
Create and submit internal Work Orders for equipment failures or malfunctions
Function, when directed by the FDOT, as a member of Emergency Response Team
Employ various software applications, including “SunGuide,” running within the RTMC environment to control ITS field devices, monitor traffic flow, and perform data analysis
Review and ensure the accuracy of all data submissions in RTMC operator logs, reports and documentation
Provide guidance to responders and motorists during severe traffic events
Post alerts, notifications and messages on the Florida “511 Traffic information system (FLATIS)”
Assist in coordinating responses to disasters and high profile special events that affect the roadway
Perform other related work as directed
High school diploma or GED required
Candidates must pass drug screen and National (by fingerprint), criminal background check prior to employment.
Experience in a public safety, emergency management, transportation dispatch or similar environment is preferred
Prior knowledge of the SunGuide® Software and related systems is preferred
Skills in interpersonal relationships and ability to work well within a diverse group
Demonstrated ability to write reports and correspondence
Ability to clearly communicate written and verbal information in English
Ability to take calls, dispatch on a radio or telephone and otherwise clearly communicate information over a radio system or network in a clear and concise manner
Ability to use freeway management and other traffic control computer applications
Capable of multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment
Familiarity with FDOT D3 Interstates and local roadways preferred
Ability to use computers in a “Windows-based applications”
Ability to work alternate work schedules and be on-call as necessary
May be subject to short or no-notice work assignments
Controlled, indoor environment (non-smoking), with dimmed lighting
Dynamic, fast-paced, multi-tasking environment
Significant periods of CCTV monitor viewing, monitoring other sources of information and data entry
Heavy telephone and computer usage
Closely supervised shift schedule; monitored performance with routine evaluation
